How Much Iodine Should I Take? Can I Take Too Much Iodine?

Our own wellness mentor, Dr. Carolyn Dean, MD ND, made the following comments regarding iodine dosing:

If you are using a low dose, fully absorbed iodine supplement, then 150 mcg will activate and/or rebalance the thyroid. Any more than that will overstimulate the thyroid hormone cascade and cause receptor jamming and an overload of iodine.

Moreover, the National Institute of Health lists the following symptoms of supplementing too much iodine:

symptoms similar to iodine deficiency, including goiter (an enlarged thyroid gland). High iodine intake can also cause thyroid gland inflammation and thyroid cancer. Getting a very large dose of iodine (several grams, for example) can cause burning of the mouth, throat, and stomach, fever, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weak pulse, and coma.

They also give "daily upper limits for iodine include intakes from all sources—food, beverages, and supplements" -- as:

Life Stage

Upper Limit

Birth to 12 months:

Not Established

Children 1–3 years:

200 mcg

Children 4–8 years:

300 mcg

Children 9–13 years:

600 mcg

Teens 14–18 years:

900 mcg

Adults:

1,100 mcg

(These levels do not apply to people who are taking iodine for medical reasons under the care of a doctor.)

If I Can't Take Iodine, Is there an alternative?

Dr Carolyn Dean MD ND talks about an alternative for supplementing for people who are "sensitive" to iodine on page 89 of her eBook, Total Body ReSet for Women.
