OXALATE FILE

Reference: Online sites and newly published Toxic Superfoods: How Oxalate Overload is Making You Sick. Sally Norton.

What are oxalates?

Oxalate is an organic acid found in plants, but some can also be synthesized by your body. Oxalates are part of the plants’ protection against being eaten. Oxalate binds minerals (because it has two negative charges – calciUM, magnesium, zinc, potassium) and has been linked to kidney stones when it binds to calcium.

Taking high amounts of Mg can remove oxalate from the body and prevent calcium oxalate kidney stones. Oxalates also interfere in other metabolic and cellular processes and can be deposited in other tissues of the body.  Although mineral depletion is the main concern regarding oxalates, vitamin depletion is an issue as well.

I learned about oxalates in my naturopathic training and much more about them when I worked a group of parents of autistic children in NY. These parents were so on top of all the foods and supplements that could affect their children. I learned so much from them.

almonds, amaranth, black beans, brazil nuts, beets, blackberries, buckwheat, carob chips, carrots, cashew nuts, cannellini beans, celery, chocolate, corn meal, dried apricots, cooked tomatoes, great northern beans, green peppers, hazelnuts, marshmallow root, milk thistle, navy beans, oil of oregano, okra, peanuts, pecans, pine nuts, pink beans, pinto beans, potato chips, potato flour, rice bran, rhubarb, sesame seeds and tahini, slippery elm bark, all soy, spinach, star fruit, sweet potatoes, teff (flour and whole grain), quinoa (whole grain), white bean flour, and yucca powder.

But our body protects us from oxalates. Ginney’s the Pastor here, but I’m going to quote from the Bible. Genesis 1:29: And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. from this verse I say that we aren’t given foods from the earth that we can’t eat. How does our body protect us from oxalates.

  1. Bile binds oxalates to calcium for elimination but too much calcium in the diet or as supplements can lead to calcium oxalate stones. Rx: Support liver health: ReMag and ReAline
  2. Magnesium deficiency can reduce the contractile activity of the bile ducts.
  3. Magnesium also binds to oxalates, which are safely excreted.
  4. Magnesium directs calcium to the bones and teeth taking it out of soft tissues and if it’s high in the blood.
  5. Vitamin B6 as it is a critical co-factor in the breakdown of oxalates into glycine (a significant protein building block).
  6. The microbiome helps to reduce oxalates especially the bacteria named oxalobacter formigenes.
  7. However, (yeast) overgrowth can impact the diversity in bacteria, reducing the population of oxalobacter formigenes.
