Why Do We Need Zinc?
Zinc, according to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, plays an important role in the structure and function of the immune system. It is a co-factor for nearly 100 enzymes in the body; has a role in protein synthesis; wound care; DNA synthesis; and cell division; supports normal growth and development during pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence; and is required for a proper sense of taste and smell. Daily intake of zinc is required to maintain these functions because the body has no specialized zinc storage system.
